Body Fat Linked To 6 Types of Cancers

Ten years ago, scientists were able to link excess body fat to just one type of cancer – endometrial, or uterine lining. In October 2007, researchers from the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund announced that they have linked 5 additional cancers as increased risk for people with excess body fat, especially around the waist.

A major reason for this finding is that excess abdominal fat has an influence on levels of hormones and bio-chemical growth factors, which have been liked to the early growth of cancer cells. Furthermore, this excess belly fat creates a low-level inflammation in the body, which is more susceptible to the growth of cancer cells. (For more detailed information, see Deadly Dangers of Fats and Sweets in this section.)

The present report is the result of reviewing 7,000 studies from around the world. According to the panel, their recommendations are “based on the best available evidence, which has been identified, collected, analyzed, displayed, summarized, and judged systematically, transparently, and independently.”

The Panel concludes that the evidence that high body fatness and also physical inactivity are causes of a number of cancers is particularly strong. The research found correlation between excess fat and cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and rectum, endometrial and kidney, along with breast cancer in post-menopausal women.

The Panel Offered These Guidelines

  1. Be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight.

  2. Being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day.

  3. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods (fast food, processed foods high in sugar or fat); avoid sugary drinks (sodas)

  4. Eating more foods of plant origin (fruits and vegetables).

  5. Limiting intake of red meat (under 18 ounces a week).

  6. Avoid processed meats – ham, bacon and hot dogs.

  7. Limit alcoholic drinks (known concerns in cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, colon and liver).

  8. Limit salt intake.

  9. Avoid moldy cereals (grains) or pulses (legumes).

  10. Get vitamins and minerals through diet alone.
