New Ocean Newly Discovered

Yes, it’s true. After about 8,000 years of recorded human civilization, scientists have discovered a new addition to the seven seas of the world – only this one is in inside the earth!

This new ocean is perhaps a little larger than the Arctic Ocean and it located deep inside the Earth’s deep mantle. (The earth’s mantle is a thick rocky shell approximately 2,900 kilometers, or 1,800 miles thick, [consisting of upper mantle, transition zone and lower mantle] comprising approximately 70% of Earth's volume.)

The discovery of the new ocean was made by seismologists at Washington University in St. Louis, who created the first 3-D model of seismic wave damping, which led to the uncovering of the underground body of water. To learn details of the scientist’s process – a sort of a CAT scan of Mother Earth – see Earth's Deep Water Cycle published by the American Geophysical Union.

The new ocean is located deep in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of eastern Asia (in line with the latitude the Chinese city of Beijing), where the depressed Pacific sea floor is sinking down into the earth. Right above the fallen sea floor, scientists observed an unusual anomaly that they termed the Beijing anomaly. This anomaly led them to identify the location and size of the large body of water.

To achieve their discovery, the scientists reportedly analyzed 80,000 shear waves from more than 600,000 seismograms and wrote many thousands of lines of computer codes to do the analyses. Wow.
