The Legend of the Eagle
Before it was called the Eagle, its name was Ukatange (uka/tan'/ge). And Ukatange talked and talked and talked to keep the wolf away. But Ukatange talked so much, it heard only itself... not the wind, not the river, not even the wolf.
And the Raven came and said, "The wolf is hungry. If you stop talking, you will hear him. And you will hear the wind. And when you hear the wind, you will fly."
And so the Eagle stopped talking and learned to soar. And its flight said all it needed to say.
Legend of the Eagle Symbolism
The wolf = fear, worry for survival.
The wind = elements of life around you that put you in touch with the Universe.
Message: When you are still and listen to the wind, you emotionally connect with the eternal realities of life and your ego lets go of fear, liberating your Eternal Spirit to soar as the Eagle.
True Fortune
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, and all the while, a great wind carries me across the sky.
Ojibwe saying (Native American Tribal Culture)
“The ultimate purpose of practicing the Daishonin’s Buddhism is to awaken to the eternity of life. It is to realize with one’s entire being that life is eternal. When we do so, we experience absolute happiness. This happiness continues eternally; it can never be destroyed. We practice faith in order to establish such happiness.”
Daisaku Ikeda (Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism Scholar), Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra
